I take while traveling. I have been told that with the right equipment, one can use the internet with a cell phone connected to the lap top if the cell phone can pick up a signal. I was also told that it is “very slow.” How slow? If I tried to check my e-mail, would it take ten minutes for it to show up on the screen? I know that there are some systems used by RVer. some of which are mounted on top of the motor home. Others operate from a portable dish located outside on a tripod, but these are very expensive. Too expensive for me. I do not need to use it a lot, just to check my e-mail once a week or so. Any information will be appreciated.

Actually you can probably get by with a simple wireless card for around 50 to 70 dollars. Most businesses are now offering free wireless connections. Places like Taco Bell and KFC as well as some local shops in many areas. These connections are free and tend to be very fast (cable modem or DSL type connections). In my town alone i have found close to 20 such connections and with as little as you access the net these would be perfect for you as then you wouldn’t have to pay a monthly subscription service for the wireless signal that and Aircard costs. But yes you can purchase a cellular aircard that will connect anywhere a cell phone will. The service charge on these can range from 30 to 50 dollars a month and the speed is fair similiar to a DSL connection. Hope this helps
